The Burntsienna Research Library is the embodiment of our social practice, installed as a five-month residency of our research library of artbooks and slow research programming.
Our research Library can now be accessed at Black Image Center - 3209 La Cienega Ave in Culver City, Los Angeles - from 9 August to 21 December 2024.
New user orientation occurs each Tuesday at 12:00p and is required for first-time access. Book care, etiquette, and library rules will be detailed at these times.
Find library rules and how to register for library access below.

BRS LIBRARY RULES
treat books with respect, but not ‘precious’. they are to be touched and handled, just in a responsible way. if a book needs attention or structural care, please notify the Librarian in Residence.
remove books carefully from book stacks. if desired book is near or at the bottom of a selected stack, remove books one at a time to arrive at the desired title (grasping the spine by the middle, not at the edges). replace book in the same manner upon completion.
turn pages slowly. please do not flip pages or wet fingers to turn a page, as this impacts the integrity of the pages. turn pages gently, preferably from the top corners. remember, this is a space dedicated to slowness; you are here, to take your time.
no food or drink around artbooks or reference materials. keep tables free of food or drink residue before exploring books. see previous house rule on responsible book handling.
photography of books is welcomed and highly encouraged. useful for making notes, sharing ideas, or extending research further. a picture equals one thousand words; by all means, snap away to share idea seeds and reference points. this is why we are here.
books are not permitted to leave the building. books may only be explored upstairs, away from food/drink; or back downstairs, being returned to library. so take many, many pictures of your favourites, and be an upstanding protector of our space for research.
limit ‘signed out’ book stacks to three (3) at a time upstairs, to honour the access for others. a new sign-out is required for each stack. every time.
library access hours are Tuesday - Thursday, 12:00a - 6:00p for registered co-working users at Black Image Center. Librarian is onsite each access day to personally guide and advise new rabbit holes and divergent avenues for your research.
weekends we prioritize for slow time recharging, and field research in real life - preferably with camera in hand or in good company. we invite you to join this practice of slowing down.
all of our work will be there when we come back, refreshed.
last call for books is at 5:30p each day. all signed out books are to be returned neatly to library stocks by 5:50p daily.
